St. Nicholas, Wm. Croome, “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, Poets of America, 1840
The third depiction of St. Nicholas in America
In 1840, artist William Croome created the third depiction of St. Nicholas in America to accompany “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in Poets of America, a volume of works by American poets. St. Nick, looking over his shoulder, is wearing a small pack similar to that in Weir’s painting, a jaunty hat with a feather in it, and a well-trimmed beard.
