Sinter Klass (P. Servaas, 1766). This 1766 woodcut created by P. Servaas appears to be the earliest depiction of Sinterklaas riding a horse while distributing gifts to Dutch children, a role that has changed little since 1766 except for the addition of Zwarte Piet (“Black Peter”) as the gift-giver’s side-kick in the nineteenth century.
